MIRAGE IIID A3-105

1/48 Heller Mirage IIID A3-105, 2 OCU

by Andrew Doppel

Introduction

Serial : A3-105

Type : Mirage IIID

Squadron : 2 Operational Conversion Unit (2OCU) (circa 26/4/84)

Scheme :  Three tone camouflage with tan replacing the DSG.  This aircraft was regularly transferred for trials to ARDU but remained in 2OCU markings.  Crashed 26/4/84 during Exercise Pitch Black due to U/C failure.  This colour scheme was used to try to make the Mirage appear more like the visiting F4 Phantoms of the USAF.  The tail remains in the car park of the Darwin Aviation Museum.  The front instrument panel has been restored and remains on display in my personal collection.

Kit : Heller 1/48 Mirage IIIB/C with Red Roo conversion, Scratch built cockpit, RBF and FODS and U/C bays. High Planes Mk 6 resin seats.  Decals - Roo Decals, Italeri and scrap box.

Reference : High Planes 1/72 sheet, The Meteor, Sabre & Mirage in Australian Service (Stewart WILSON), Mirage IIIO-Colours and Markings (MASON/MOTTRAM) and personal photos.
