Paul Mason 1965 - 2006 |
by Andrew Doppel and others |
|---|
Introduction
Paul ‘Changa’ Mason (Above) was an Aircraft
Life Support Fitter in the Royal Australian Air Force.
He was a very passionate admirer of the Mirage in Australian
Air Force service which led to him and his best mate whom
we all know and respect for his aircraft knowledge - Darren ‘Motty’ Mottram
to write and publish one of the most popular and in-depth
books on the Dassault Mirage IIIO/D in Australian Colours
and Markings.
Many of us had either met or had communicated with ‘Changa’ about
Mirage specifics which he would reply to with great enthusiasm.
Unfortunately, it was with deep regret that on 22 April
2006, not long after the release of his and Darren’s
book that ‘Changa’ passed away playing rugby
league - another of his passions.
On the first anniversary of Paul’s passing a memorial
was suggested on the Aussie Modeller International website.
Given Paul’s admiration for the Mirage I suggested
to Graham and David that as a mark of respect to Paul’s
love of the Mirage that Mirage-a-thon be conducted as a
tribute to Paul. This tribute was given its blessing and
approval by Darren Mottram who will be monitoring the submissions.

--SPECIFICATIONS OF ENTRY TO THE TRIBUTE--
Paul and Darren’s book covers the many aspects of the
Mirage in RAAF service from the initial order, the Avon powered ‘City
of Hobart’ Mirage III, natural metal aircraft, lizard
schemes, anniversary schemes, grey schemes, special operation
schemes, test schemes, zapped aircraft etc, etc, etc, etc.
As a fitting tribute to ‘Changa’ a never-ending
Mirage-a-thon will commence when the AMI site is re-launched
at the end of May 2007, however, submissions can be made
now.
As there are so many variations that can be made of Australian
Mirages and the many more international models (including
Kafirs, Entards etc, etc) the conditions of the Mirage tribute
are as follows;
1. As many models of any Mirage variants can be submitted.
2. Any brand, size scale, variant can be submitted.
3. The quality of the finished model is not of importance
so long as it resembles accurately the true look of the genuine
aircraft i.e. No ‘what if’ markings or made up/wrong
colours (as has been previously posted in the discussion
group for the grey 76 Squadron Mirage with red scalloping).
4. The age of the build is not important.
5. Each model must be submitted individually and not in a
grouping.
6. There is no maximum to the number of images of each individual
Mirage submitted.
7. Mirage model images already posted on the site can either
be re-posted for the tribute or drawn from those previously
posted in Reader’s Models or the Gallery with the permission
of the submitter.
8. Each aircraft submitted has to have a kit brand name and
scale and brief details of any conversion kit used in construction
or if OOB (Out of Box).
9. Of any variant we don't want two aircraft submitted that
are the same serial number unless the colour scheme is different
in some way i.e. A3-3 in silver, lizard, grey or 2OCU, 3,
75, 76, 77, 79 Squadrons, zapped etc. An exception to this
is if another model submitted is of an equal or better quality
to the one already submitted.
10. Each aircraft submitted has to have a short story to
it of the reason for its existence in the scheme considered
and any reference against a book, picture, photo, brochure
etc must go with the model i.e.
Serial No.; A3-105
Mirage type; RAAF Mirage IIID
Based at; 2OCU Williamtown N.S.W. (Circa 1984)
Scheme; Temporary green and tan lizard livery for Exercise
Pitch Black ’84 – crashed 26/4/84 after undercarriage
failure at Darwin.
Reference; Mirage III0 Colours and Markings/Personal Photographs
Kit: 1/48 Heller Mirage IIIC/B with Redroo IIID conversion
and scratch
building
Construction by; Andrew Doppel
Email address; doppels@bigpond.com
11. All models will be posted on the AMI site so any further
entrants can view which aircraft have already been submitted
so duplication does not occur if they want to produce a different
aircraft.
12. The submitters email address is to be provided so that
any other person wishing to make that particular aircraft can
contact the constructor for references.
--AIM--
We want to achieve the greatest number of RAAF Mirage models
and any other International Mirage variants as can possibly
be modelled to match those that existed. This way we could
possibly achieve in excess of the 116 RAAF Mirages as models
in multiple variations as well as the numerous Mirages of other
nations. There will be two categories-RAAF Mirages and International
Mirages.
--NOTES--
The most important note is that this Mirage-a-thon is a tribute.
It is not a competition and is open to everybody to pay respect
to Paul ‘Changa’ Mason and his love for the Mirage/Miracle/French
Lady!
It is requested that all participants entering the tribute
submit their Mirage images in a format that does not exceed
500KB an image as this increases download time for those members
who cannot access the site using ADSL/Broadband (including
myself).
These images are to be submitted to AMI via myself C/O- doppels@bigpond.com.
By no way feel obligated to enter this Mirage-a-thon tribute
or feel compelled to do a Mirage scheme different to any of
those posted if you particularly want to do a specific aircraft
that has already posted. All I am asking is that we get as
many different variations as possible.
If you want to express an opinion about improving this tribute
please do not hesitate to respond.
