Introduction

The RAAF developed an interchangeable reconnaissance nose to enhance the Mirage IIIOs capabilities. Based on the French Mirage V nose and allowing a Fairchild KA56B1 panoramic camera to be fitted, photographing through a tent shaped window. Access to the camera was through a door that surrounded the window and which swung down and forward. Being interchangeable with the standard nose gave greater operational flexibility. The reconnaissance nose was 53cm longer than the standard nose and the standard long pitot was fitted at the tip of the nose.

The Kit

Cleanly cast in a clear resin with good panel line detail around the window and door. Only a small amount of clean up should be needed to blend the nose in. One point to watch will be the panel line for the camera door as it is close to the edge. The pitot from the kit or a replacement will need to be used as well. This nose is suitable to be used with any 1/48 scale Mirage III kit. A quick side by side with the Italeri nose shows a favourable comparison and also the increased length of the recce nose. The clear resin is an interesting approach - mask the window off and then paint the nose black perhaps?

Conclusion

For those wanting to model a Mirage IIIO Reconnaissance version this replacement nose is a must. Highly Recommended.
