Introduction

During WWI the Japanese forces conducted aerial attacks on Australia with a variety of results. As a response to these attacks the RAF and RAAF deployed several Squadrons to protect Darwin and the Northern Territory which included 79, 452 and 457 SQN's RAAF and 548 and 549 SQNs RAF. A number of the Sqns had fought in Europe and been transferred to Australia to defend the NT while other SQN's had been formed in Australia to assist in the defence of the country.

Instruction sheet

The instruction sheet is the standard DK sheet with an A4 sheet printed in colour with one side having the colours for the model and the different markings covered and the other side showing the camouflage schemes and how they should be painted. Due to there being 11 different aircraft there is an additional sheet with the last two aircraft schemes on it.

A point to note, take careful notice of the instructions and the paint scheme you want to use as the colours change and it is barely noticeable on the sheet. While the scheme may look the same on the sheet the colours are different on most of the aircraft.

The Decals

The decals cover the markings for eleven different aircraft even though the instructions say nine different camouflage schemes with all 11 aircraft having nose art in some form, including the famous shark mouth.

The decals look well printed with the colours and definition being nicely done. Due to the various RAAF/RAF instructions changing during the period represented by the decals, the code letters and numbers changed colour a few times and this is represented in the colour of the markings on the sheet. The national markings also cover a variety of sizes and look to be a good colour.

The sheet has markings for the following aircraft:

  1. Spitfire Mk Vc BS219 (A58-84)/ ZP*X, FLGOFF F Hamilton, 457 Squadron RAAF, 1943. Scheme of Dark Earth and Foliage Green uppers with Azure Blue undersides.
  2. Spitfire Mk Vc, BS186 (A58-74) / *L, FLTLT Hall, 452 SQN RAAF, Darwin 1943. Scheme of Earth Brown and Foliage Green uppers with Sky Blue undersides.
  3. Spitfire Mk Vc, A58-143 / UP*Y, 79 SQN RAAF, New Guinea 1943. Scheme of Earth Brown and Foliage Green uppers with Sky Blue undersides and white tail.
  4. Spitfire Mk Vc, EE853 (A158-146)/ UP*O, 79 SQN RAAF, New Guinea 1943. Scheme of Earth Brown and Foliage Green uppers with Sky Blue undersides and white tail.
  5. Spitfire Mk Vc, JG912 (A58-180)/ UP*S, 79 SQN RAAF, New Guinea 1943. Scheme of Earth Brown and Foliage Green uppers with Sky Blue undersides and white tail.
  6. Spitfire Mk VIII, A58-470 / ZP*K, 457 SQN RAAF, 1944. Scheme of Earth Brown and Foliage Green uppers with Azure Blue undersides.
  7. Spitfire Mk VIII, A58-492 / UP*B, FLGOFF H Kennare, 79 SQN RAAF, Morotai. Scheme of Ocean Grey and Dark Green uppers with Medium Sea Grey underneath.
  8. Spitfire Mk VIII, A58-513 / UP*X, SQNLDR R Susans, 79 SQN RAAF, 1945. Scheme of Foliage Green uppers and Sky Blue undersides.
  9. Spitfire Mk VIII, A58-602 / RG*V, WGCDR R Gibbes, 80 Wing RAAF, Morotai 1945. Scheme of Foliage Green / Ocean Grey uppers with Medium Sea Grey undersides and shark mouth nose art.
  10. Spitfire Mk VIII, A58-600 / ZP*X, WGCDR C Caldwell, 457 SQN RAAF, 1945. Scheme of Ocean Grey and Dark Green uppers with Medium Sea Grey underneath and shark mouth nose art.
  11. Spitfire Mk VIII, A58-379 / ZF*Z, SQNLDR D Glaser, 549 SQN RAF, Darwin 1945. Scheme of all over Aluminium.

I have used DK decals on my RAAF Beaufigther Mk 1c and they go on well so I see no reason for this to have changed for this set.

Recommendation

This set covers a large number of camouflage schemes and nose arts so I dare say that if you wanted to buy only one sheet you could do it with this one. The sheet is well printed and will go on to the model well if the instructions are followed. I Highly Recommend this sheet for the RAF/RAAF Spitfires in the Pacific.
