Kits At War Decals

Sheet K7/16 SAAF aircraft

by David Harvey

Introduction

Following on from the review of Kits At War Decal sheet K7/14 by Damian Coburn we received a number of other decal sheets from the Kits At War range. This sheet covers a number of South African Air Force aircraft in 1/72. The decals come in a plastic ziplock bag with a double sided colour instruction sheet. The Kits at War range covers Commonwealth aircraft from during WWII as well as post war. The number of different aircraft types and countries covered is quite extensive so you will have to look at the site to browse through them all. The company itself is based in the Netherlands and produces the Kits at War range of Decals as well as a series of 'History, Camouflage and Markings profiles of Dutch aircraft, it also formerly produced the Dutch Decals range.

The Instruction sheet

The instruction sheet is a double sided colour sheet that shows the placement of the decals supplied as well as suggestions for the paint colours and the kit to use for the model. For each aircraft there is usualy a two or four view diagram of the camouflage required as well as the colours You will also require the original kit instruction sheet to place the kit supplied decals. The sheet doesn't list the colours for Kittyhawk F Mk III FR817 but I dare say if you are interested in SAAF aircraft you will easily find the colours required.

The decals

The decals cover the following aircraft:

a. Short Sunderland GR V, PP156/1712, no 35 SQN SAAF, Congella Dunbar, Sth Africa 1945. Gloss White/Matt White/Extra Dark Sea Grey scheme.
b. Beaufort Mk II, AW313F, No 16 SQN Misurata 238 Wing SAAF 1945. Dark Slate Grey / Extra Dark Sea Grey / Sky scheme.
c. Marauder Mk II (B-26C), FB443, K, No 24 SQN SAAF, Nth Africa 1944. Olive Drab / Nuetral Grey scheme.
d. Mohawk F Mk I, 2511, NORD TRANSVAAL, No 4 SQN SAAF, Abyssinia 1941. Dk Green / Dk Earth / Sky scheme.
e. Mohawk F Mk I, 2537, No 3 SQN SAAF, Abyssinia 1941. Dk Green / Dk Earth / Sky scheme.
f. Mohawk F Mk ID, 2518, No 3 SQN SAAF, Abyssinia 1941.Dk Green / Dk Earth / Sky scheme.
g. Kittyhawk F Mk IV, 5082 *16, No 11 SQN OTU SAAF, Waterkloof 1944. Dk Earth / Middle Stone / Azure Blue scheme.
h. Kittyhawk F Mk IV, 5077 *R, No 11 SQN OTU SAAF, Port Elizabeth 1945. Dk Earth / Middle Stone / Azure Blue scheme.
i. Kittyhawk F Mk III, FR817, No 5 SQN SAAF, Italy 1944.
j. Junkers 52/3m, *26 SAAF. Dark Green / Azure Blue scheme.

As you can see this sheet covers a large variety of aircraft and schemes. The decal sheet only provides you with those not supplied by the kit sheets so don't dispose of the kit decals! You are supplied with two sheets for this set, one main sheet which includes white backing and the other small sheet that provides one extra decal. The main sheet is a standard type sheet of decals that are separated (not continuous sheeting) and they look quite good. The second small sheet has only one decals on it which is continuous sheet so you have to trim it carefully. The decals are clearly marked on the sheet so you will not lose the one you are after in the large number available.

Summary

This is an impressive collection of decals on one sheet! If you are a fan of the South African Air Force then this company is producing the decals for you. My only real concern at this stage is that the sheet seems to like sticking to the bag it comes in! This may just be the lovely weather we are currently having here in Wodonga but it may cause problems in the future. Other than this small concern I think that this sheet covers a country that you don't often see decals for even though they played a large part of the war in the desert and other areas.

I am unsure of the availability in Australia but they can be ordered direct from the company.
