Introduction

This sheet from Red Roo Models covers Spitfires Mk 1, IIA and Vb as used by 457 Squadron (RAAF) during the period 1941 - 42 in the United Kingdom. The Mk 1 and Vb kits are readily available from many manufacturers whilst I believe that the Mk II needs to be converted from the Mk 1. According to the instruction sheet this set is a 'universal' set and will fit the majority of kits available.

The Instruction sheet

Red Roo have provided an eight page (including cover sheet) A4 set of instructions showing the four options available for the set.  Each option has a colour four view profile drawing that shows the locations of all markings on the sheet. You are also provided a colour guide with relevant BS numbers where available for each aircraft.

The Instruction sheet

The decals provided are well printed and solid in colour. The red/white/blue roundels come with a separate red dot for the centre and the tail flash comes in two styles for the different time frames. The decals have a fair amount of carrier film around the codes compared to previous decals from Red Roo, but this should not cause a problem as it can be left as is or trimmed if required.

The schemes provided are:

  • Spitfire Mk 1, X4817, BP-C, 457 Squadron RAAF,  Jurby, Isle of Man, September 1941. Camouflage scheme of RAF Dark Green, Ocean Grey and Medium Sea Grey with Sky spinner and fuselage band.
  • Spitfire Mk 1, N3246, BP-P, 457 Squadron RAAF, Jurby, Isle of Man, September 1941. Camouflage scheme of RAF Dark Green, Ocean Grey and Medium Sea Grey with Sky spinner and fuselage band.
  • Spitfire Mk IIA, P8175, BP-R 'Charleville/Baltic Exchange II', 457 Squadron RAAF, Andreas, Isle of Man, October 1941. Camouflage scheme of RAF Dark Green, Dark earth and Sky Type S on lower surfaces with Sky spinner and fuselage band.
  • Spitfire Mk Vb, BL351, BP-H, 457 Squadron RAAF, Andreas, Isle of Man, February 1942. The aircraft of FLTLT J.A.A. Gibson. Camouflage scheme of RAF Dark Green, Ocean Grey and Medium Sea Grey with Sky spinner and fuselage band.

Recommendation

As with all Red Roo Models decal sheets I have reviewed these are of very good quality and are definitely recommended for use.
