In 1951 a RAAF Instruction was put out that detailed the fitment of a Target Towing system for a Mustang to carry a 1000 ft cable on a quickly fitted assembly. This assembly allowed a Target to be towed for other aircraft such as other Mustangs and Lincolns to conduct live fire shoots at a moving target.

At this stage, according to Southern Cross Mustangs, there were only eight Mustangs identified that were fitted with this Target Towing assembly.

Having a bundle of ICM Mustangs and the Red Roo conversion set I decided to embark on a build of what would be a 'different' coloured Mustang from the rest of the ones I have made in the past.

The build

For this build I used the ICM 1/48 P-51D kit and an Eduard PE set for the cockpit and some other elements. For the most part it was a straight build with few issues but the cockpit PE needed a small change, namely the painting of the US Interior Green PE to the Australian Interior Green. For the Australian Green I normally use Humbrol Hu2 Emerald to represent the 'apple green' as shown in the images in Southern Cross Mustang.

For a more detailed build log look on the AMI forum HERE. Out of pure laziness I didn't do any weathering to the model but I think it looks very nice as is.
